We have in stock a range of figurative works, including oils, works on paper, and sculpture. Amongst the traditional artists in our stock room who have produced figurative work are Charles Conder, Rupert Bunny, George Lambert, Jacob Epstein and Nora Heysen, daughter of the great Australian landscape painter Hans Heysen. Many of these artists spent long periods of time studying and working in Europe alongside their European contemporaries. Rupert Bunnyís ìModels in the Gardenî was painted while the artist lived in France in the latter years of the 19th Century and early 20th century. Thea Proctor evokes the ëbelle epoqueí in her beautiful watercolour 'Reclining Nude'.
From the latter part of the 20th Century, and more recently our stockroom contains figurative works by leading Australian artistís such as Arthur Boyd, Ray Crooke, Robert Dickerson, Sidney Nolan, Clifton Pugh, Donald Friend, Brett Whiteley, William Boissevain, Gary Shead and sculptor Guy Boyd.
Although some of these artists are also well known for their paintings of the Australian landscape, for some it is their figurative work that is of more significance. Donald Friend travelled the world and lived in many places including Italy, Sri Lanka and Bali, where his depictions of the local people , particularly the adolescent male, show his fine draughtsmanship.
William Boissevain has produced many nude studies in his body of work, and our stock room includes some fine examples. Arthur Boyd, one of Australiaís most renowned artists, also produced many figurative works, such as the beautiful pastel ìBride Over a Poolî, circa 1962. Gary Shead, one of our stockroom favourites, is well represented in our stockroom, with satirical pieces from the D.H Lawrence series in the early 90s, and also several nude studies. |
