James Gleeson was born in Sydney in 1915. In his youth, Gleeson studied and travelled extensively through Europe and was greatly influenced and inspired by the Italian Masters and Modern Surrealists.

Today, Gleeson is considered Australia's foremost Surrealist painter and is highly regarded as an author, historian and art critic. He has held over 40 solo exhibitions from 1950 to the present day and is represented in the National Gallery of Australia, all state galleries, many regional galleries and numerous corporate and private collections.

The National Gallery of Victoria mounted a major retrospective exhibition of the artist's work in 2004, titled "Beyond the Screen of Sight".

Between the years 1976 and 1982 Gleeson was a member of the first Council of the Australian National Gallery and in 1975 he was awarded the Order of Australia for his contribution to Australian art. In 1989 he was granted a Degree of Doctor of Letters from Macquarie University and in 2001 a Degree of Doctor of Letters from the University of NSW. Gleeson's work is represented in the National Gallery of Australia, all state galleries and various regional Galleries, private and corporate collection both in Australia and internationally.
