Buying

Savill Galleries services collectors of museum quality modern and traditional Australian paintings, as well as some impressionist and contemporary pieces and has one of the largest privately owned stockrooms in Australia.

One of the unique aspects of Savill Galleries stockroom is the inclusion of works painted by artists early in their careers, such as Arthur Boyd’s oils of the Mornington Peninsula painted in his teen years to more mature works painted when he was a household name and highly sought after by collectors.

Savill Galleries specialise in building and managing private clients’ collections as it grows or changes with new acquisitions, as well as providing assistance and advice on deaccessioning. The philosophy is to maintain strong client relationships throughout the development and lifespan of their collection.

Having been in the business for many years, Savill Galleries understand all aspects of the industry, including hanging, conservation, packaging and specialist freight carriers.

There are three ways you can view works:

  • visit the gallery
  • peruse our website
  • subscribe to our mail list to receive email alerts and/or printed catalogues
Savill Galleries prides itself on its discretion and confidentiality and its high level of service.

Selling

Savill Galleries are always looking to purchase oil paintings by important Australian artists and own 99% of its stock.

How do I find out whether Savill Galleries can handle the sale my art work?

  • Is your piece an original art work (not a commercial reproduction or print) by a prominent Australian artist?
  • Is your art work by an artist whose work is exhibited in an Australian state gallery such as the Art Gallery of NSW or National Gallery of Victoria?
If you have a museum quality painting and it fits the above minimum criteria, please feel free to email or post us the following information in order for us to advise you on the next step.

Essential information required:
  • Photograph/s of the art work (no bigger than 1MB per image)
  • the artists name
  • medium (eg. oil on canvas, watercolour on paper etc)
  • size of the art work (measured from the edges of the picture and not including the frame)
  • when and where the artwork was acquired or purchased (information regarding the piece’s provenance such as: previous owners, the name of dealer, gallery or auction house where it was purchased, the date it came into your possession etc)

Desirable information:

  • title and date of the art work
  • inscriptions which appear on the art work such as signatures, titles, dates etc.
