Our stockroom has a range of traditional paintings from the 19th and early 20th centuries, including works by Australian masters from the colonial period, such as Conrad Martens , Louis Buvelot and Nicholas Chevalier, through to works by Australian artists who worked extensively in Europe such as Charles Conder, Rupert Bunny and John Peter Russell. We also have works by some of Australiaís greatest landscape painters such as Elioth Gruner, Penleigh Boyd, Llloyd Rees, Percy Leason and Will Ashton.
The unique character of the Australian landscape is beautifully transcribed in paintings such as Grunerís 'Study for Nepean River Landscape', which captures the Nepean Valley and itís pastoral glory, with a wonderful grandeur, or his 'Spring, A Farm and Blossom Trees Bathurst's, which depicts the wonderful clarity of the Australian sunlight falling on the trees and farmlands around Bathurst, NSW. Rubery Bennett captures the vast magnificence of the Australian interior in his oil 'Central Australia' oil.
Cityscapes are also featured in works by Sydney Long, such as 'Staple Inn, Holburn', painted in London, and John (William) Ashtonís 'Barge on a European River', as these artists often travelled and painted extensively in Europe to widen their experience and paint with their European counterparts.
Figurative works are among this collection, such as John Peter Russellís handsome 'Les Deux Mattiocco', and Rupert Bunnyís 'Models in the Garden', painted in France when the artist was living there, as well as narrative paintings such as Nicolas Chevalierís ìBeauties by a Wellî, and still life paintings by Rupert Bunny and George Whinnen.
This is just a selection of the many works available from our extensive stockroom. |
